Whenever you work on the tanks turn off the filters and don't turn them on until the tank settles again.

I have my 3rd tank now in the cycling in stage and have used pool filter sand, thank you!  Rinsing the sand was a pleasure compared to what I went through in the past.  One concern - the pool filter sand is a lot finer than the sand I've been using and I have read that sand can take a horrendous toll on power filter pumps.  Should I expect to have this problem?  I am using HOB filters and generallly have my intakes no less than 3 inches from the tank substrate.

tanks, tanks everywhere-and nary a tank to spare!!!

Thanks all- I'll do it.  My play sand was bought for garden work a couple years ago and had stuff growing in it - plus when I first rinsed it the water was scuzzy, really scuzzy. I felt I had to kill all the pathogens so took the drastic action of bleaching, aware of the hazards.  I chemically neutrified the chlorine and converted it to gases, then rinsed the snot out of it.  You can see why it was so much work.  Fortunately it worked out well.  I hadn't thought about pool filter sand.

PFS used in my tanks with very little rinsing. Go to Menards and buy a paint strainer(it's a bag) for ~$1.00. Fill it with sand and dip it it in a bucket of water. It works great.

Using bleach to rinse sand?  Not a good idea, just rinse the snot out of it and it's fine ..have sand in about 25 of my tanks never had a problem....

I just rinsed my pool filter sand very well.  No problems so far and it's been a few years.

Not checked for facts.

Please bear with me.  I'm long on tooth but technology has kept moving along while I slept for a few years.

When I set up my first two tanks recently I spent a lot of time and worked awful hard at bleaching, neutralizing and cleaning debris out of bagged sand from Ace Hardware available out here in the boonies.  I am in the process of setting up my third tank.  What would I have to do to prepair white pool filter sand for use in my Tanganyika tanks?
