Chicago area retailers to patronize

Fish People~

I respectfully disagree, King Coral is Great! ~IMHO~ Also if you are a GCCA Member there is a coupon in the Cichlid Chatter, for (I believe) 15% off for GCCA members. I enjoy Living Sea, but for my Cichlid Tastes, I stick to the GCCA Classifieds and King Coral.

Living Sea is in park ridge i believe. King Coral does have a better selection then most as far as types you would see at swaps etc. But from the couple of times I have been in there the tanks were not cleaned and it was hard to tell what exactly was in the tanks. Many things mislabeled. No offense to your son. I wasn't there on a weekend. Living sea is an awesome place but doesn't have a huge selection of cichlids. As much as I hate petlands aka aquarium adventure that's probably your best bet.

If you get out to King Coral on a Saturday, there's a good chance you'll run into my son Sam who works there. He's an active cichlid keeper with 70+ spawns to his name already. King Coral is a a great shop . . . cozy, but with a good selection.

well since you liked king coral in Mt prospect. Rainbow pets in schaumburg and when i visited had an awesome selection of peacocks and haps...the rest of the store was ehhh. if you want to look at cool show tanks you can visit Aquarium Adventure in Hoffman estates. they have some expensive fish but neat show tanks. another cool store is Living sea aquarium although i cant remember what town it is in but it is only about 20 minutes from schaumburg.

I am a new member and this is my first post on this forum.  I live in southwestern Illinois.  I keep Malawi cichlids and angelfish.

I will be traveling to Chicago in a month or so for a continuing education seminar.  Luckily it ends at 1 p.m. or so, which will give me the afternoon to do some shopping for Malawi cichlids before a 4-hour drive home.

Of course, with the immense size of the metropolitan area, I can only cover a small fraction of the local fish stores in the area.  I am looking for some help in determining which shops I should hit.  I'm looking for a final list of 3-4 shops.

I have reviewed some of the profiles on cichlid-forum.com, but most of the reviews are 4-5 years old, which is an eternity in this business.  I am looking for fresher information.

The last time I made such a run in Chicago, I bought some fish at King Coral on Montrose in the city and Rainbow Pets in Schaumberg.  I liked both places.  (I understand the former has moved out into the suburbs.)  I also went to a place out in Algonquin that I did not like so much.

I keep peacocks, mbuna, and omniverous haps.  I'm looking for groups of young fish as well as single adult males for my 135.  Species that I especially crave are Placidochromis phenochilus tanzania (star sapphire), Melanochromis cyanoerhabdos, Ps. sp. "Manda blue dolphin," and Tropheops macrophthalmus "albino red hood."

If anyone can provide me with some advice, I would be most appreciative.  Private messages are fine.

Thanks in advance for any help that I receive.
