i was at the bolingbrook AA last ngith and they had a couple small like 4-5 " arrowanas for sale...  cool stuff, and they have awesome german rams there also, my buddy picked up a m/f for his new 30 i made him set up for cichlids, hes a saltwater fan, but i think all the visits to my basements have changed his mind.

girl picked up at bar:  oh wow u have alot of fishies in here, arent they supposed to be gold, like goldfish...  why arent these ones gold, oh that one is so ugly, why would u have more than one tank....  (she carried on for about 10 mins).

i was just at the Aquarium Adventure land today and they are really started to amp it up. alot of their fish are from florida farms so they are pushing like i dunno 8 or 9 inches? only some of them are that big. others are inch, or 2 inch or 3. good variety but still some hybrids.

You can easily hit all 4 stores.

Google living sea aquarium for the website to look into the shark feeding times. I went there solely for the shark feeding. You can even hand feed the sharks if you want.

I looked at a map of the Chicago metro area.  It seems like Aquarium Adventures (Hoffman Estates), Living Sea, Rainbow Pets and King Coral are all pretty much on the I-90 corridor heading west towards Rockford.

I should be able to hit all four places in one afternoon, I would think.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.

If you get out to King Coral on a Saturday, there's a good chance you'll run into my son Sam who works there. He's an active cichlid keeper with 70+ spawns to his name already. King Coral is a a great shop . . . cozy, but with a good selection.

I have found "mom/pop" non chain small pet stores to be the best I have ever been to for quality/selection of fish

both Aquarium Adventures are owned by the same guy. each store has their own management and staff. the guy incharge of the fish department in bolingbrook think the best cichlid ever is the greman blue ram so i guess you can tell what he knows.

Aquarium Adventure are nice stores to look at but Ihave bought very little in the terms of livestock from either store.

The place is nice, but like Bearfan said, pricey. 12 bucks average for one 2 inch cichlid. average quality. better than like petco or petsmart. theyre tanks are pretty clean, but not pristine. Its a nice to walk around, but still pricey, some hybrids too, but another plus is that they actually somewhat properly label the fish. check it out, im not sure what your into, but i like the place  ;D ;D ;D

There is a new Aquarium Adventure in Bolingbrook, IL too.  I love their tanks.  The are a bit pricey.

Is the Bolingbrook store basically a copy of the one in Hoffman Estates?  (in terms of cichlid selection)

If so, that is the one I'll hit.  I go right by Bolingbrook on I-55 on my route to and from Chicago.

I like AA because it has the cool show tanks. I mean its easy to make a cool show tank when you have a tank the size of a swimming pool. and they are pricey and have a few good employees. Dotty and dave are great. Dave used to run rainbow pets.

...

Rainbow pets had a nice selection of haps and peacocks when I was there but the rest of the tanks were dirty and un kept. It looked as if they either didnt care about the other fish or just stopped cleaning halfway through.

Yeah, I still have a business card in my wallet from Rainbow Pets from my prior visit there.  The name on the business card is Dave ....

I do remember that Rainbow had a tank full of beautiful male peacocks.  I wasn't equipped for them at the time, so I had to pass.  I did buy what I thought was a harem of C. borleyi (one of the four females turned out to be a subdom male) and a pair of Tropheus macrophthalmus (albino red hood).  (They only had a single female for sale.)

The red hoods long ago met their demise.  I still have one of the three original female borleyi, as well as some fish from a spawn.  (The spawn took place while they were still in a quarantine tank after the purchase.)  I also still have the subdom male.  I brought him to my office after he got beaten up by the dom male and put him in with a trio of OB peacocks and my colony of yellow labs.  He has colored up nicely, and gets along well with his tankmates.  (The dom male unfortunately got some horrid bulge behind one of his eyes about 6-8 months ago.)

The place in algonquin was, I believe, Strandell's.  It closed 2 - 3 years ago.

Yeah, that was the place.  I drove all the way out to Algonquin from downtown.  All the tanks were dark.  I asked if they could turn on the lights so that I could look at their fish.  My request was declined.

Needless to say, I crossed them off my list.
