Chicago was one of the first places where bristlenose plecos were bred in quantity. Ihad thousands of them and I was shipping hundreds a week in 2001, and had dropped off 12 - 15 boxes of cats and vics on 9/10/2001. Well over a $1000 in fish that cost me about nothing.
Most made it. Some took 4 - 5 days, and i only lost one male vic - ti took 7 days to reach boston. The guy was pissed, and i gave him a refund. Talk about crazy expectations.
Breed julies, bright red peacocks, bright yellow peacocks and yellow labs. When you have too many of them, a couple of guys in Michigan will give you a buck a piece at an inch so you can unload your excess.

That's something I have never understood about LFS not wanting to tap local breeders for their stock (I'm sure there are some that do). I have even thought of a conscienment deal, set up accounts with local breeders where they bring in fish and when they sell, split what they sell for, the breeder and store would have to allow a percentage for loss, but no biggie.
I would see it as a win, win breeder gets to move their fish, LFS dosent have to pay for the fish up front. Everyone gets paid in the end.

The only problem was, it was the biggest pain in the butt, and very time consuming. I was miserable, with lots of extra cash.
I had the hot fish, and it went cold fast. Hot fish, only last so long, then your stuck.

How hard you work, how detail oriented you are, how organized you are and how much of a salesperson you are can help you make money.
There are some people that earn money they are very hardworking and have a great name and are known for excellent quality fish.
I am pretty sure the big names in the area make some money -
They have full on businesses and lots of them, import fish and buy fish from wholesalers rather than breed them.
If you can buy from a good wholesaler 1.5 inch peacocks, cost between $1 to $3 a piece, shipping costs are minimum of $!50 usually. And you have to buy 18 of each type of fish.
Their are people on the classifieds that appear to have a source from wholesalers, (meaning I am pretty confident they did bot breed these fish), crowd their fish, set up tanks with huge water changes and just order fish at the beginning of the swap season and then sell them.
I think I remember one of speakers giving a presentation and saying if you want to earn money try raising aquatic plants. If I am correct it was Laif Demason and he said they all had BMW's and left work at 4pm.
At the ACA two years ago I made all money on Baby pleco's but cichlids sold for nothing. Again I was still negative cash-flow.
