I do not have any Haps/Peacocks because I have two particularly annoying and relentless Mr. Nasties. I suspect they would make life difficult for them.
That said, your response highlighted something I should have considered: out of place. I really am a bit OCD about that trait and would not be happy with anything that would appear unnatural. So case closed. Thanks though for your input.

It's my experience that Mbuna and Haps / Peacocks from Malawi inhabit all areas of the tank. I am surprised your dont.
But to answer, "if" I were looking to such a thing, I would consider some large, full grown rainbow fish. Super fast, and colorful, and to the novice observer, they would not stand out as "out of place".

My question is sort of borderline (whether Cichlid or non-Cichlid), but I’m leaning for Cichlid as that variable cannot change. Understanding that this may be sacrilege, here it goes:
What species of fish have you had success with in keeping with Africans? Specifically, I have a tank of Malawi and may want to add some other species-mainly to utilize the top portion of the tank. Other than cats, are there any species that do okay in this type of set-up? And if so, what?
