thanks guys they all look pretty good and i did get them from a tank that had just yellabs and was marked electric yellows ill prob hang on to them for awhile then.. dont really plan on any fry being sold from them if they do breed maybe give a few to a buddy and would def. let him know.. but most likely if they have good color they shouldn't be hybrized?

havn't had any ich problems no cats or plecos in the tank yet..

I bet they taste like bluegill..lol

I think the question is: Do yellow labs hybridize with anything?

My only concern with buying cichlids from the big stores is you can't be sure what you're getting.  Petsmart normally just has a tank of 'mixed africans' that seem to all be hybrids of some sort.

If they look good I would keep them and even breed them, just make sure if you sell them/distribute them in any way they are properly labeled.

Question is if i plan to keep and breed these fish are they of lesser quility then if i where to buy them from a private breeder or lfs.
please share any/all opinions thanks..

Do they look good?  Do they have good markings?  Most of the yellow labs in the hobby today come from a wild pair a while back.  Genetically they aren't the most diverse, so is the quality better or worse than a local breeder, who knows.  The biggest issue is the ich that most likely comes with your big box purchase.  If you keep them with catfish or loaches you'll soon find out.

Most likely you aren't going to get the quality from petsmart/co/land that you would from a local breeder.

If you are looking for fish the best bet would be at the March 6th swap meet.

Good luck.

well i setup a 55gal about two months ago and even though i read alot of opinoins on fish from chain stores i couldn't stand looking at an empty tank anymore so i got a few fish from petsmart to hold me over til i find everything i really want. I bought 5 yellow labs and a few others only intend on keeping the labs in the long run though. Question is if i plan to keep and breed these fish are they of lesser quility then if i where to buy them from a private breeder or lfs.
