Raise the intake further off the sand.

I recently changed from gravel to sand.  However my greshaki is spitting sand into the intake of my filter.  The filter has stopped running twice but I caught it before it burned out.  cleaned it and set it back up again.  Since that didn't solve the problem of the fish spitting sand into it (duh) The third time I made a sleeve for the intake (thin cotton) that seems to keep the sand out but I am not getting a good flow return  thus not filtering the water very well.  It is a bio wheel and there isn't enough water to actually turn the wheel on the return. I don't want to do another canister (too expensive) and I like the look of the sand.....has anyone else had this problem or can someone suggest a solution? any ideas are welcome.

Thanks
