Breeding African Cichlids in Chicago Water

8 years 3 months ago #32950 by mikeg2929
With regards to africans -

add water=> add fish => wait. It usually works pretty easily.

If you want to condition them - some frozen food for a few days and then hit them with a water change a few degrees cooler.

works just about every time.

Chicago water works great for most african cichlids with no modification other than dechlorinator.

Most people suggest just doing large water changes and frequent and don't futz with the water for african cichlids.

For soft water loving south american cichlids its another story.

Hey everyone...I have been starting to experiment breeding African Cichlids ( more specifically starting with Labidochromis caeruleus for the past few months) and wanted to see if anyone has had experience with breeding their cichlids in Chicago tap water. I use a sand to increase the pH to 8.3 in everyone of my tanks and have been using a dechlorinator which also removes heavy metals during water changes. I've been able to Successfully have my yellow labs mate but just want to see if anyone Does anything different in regards to their Chicago tap water? Also is there anything else I have to worry about when using Chicago tap water. I would appreciate any input and thank you to all who reply!
