Blue Dolphin fry

Bare bottom is fine it will be easier to tell if you are over feeding and when you need to clean/change water. As far as water changes you don't need to pull water from the main tank fresh clean water at 50% is fine. We suggested using tank water and an established sponge to just start the cycle of the 10 and so there was no drastic change for the holding female. Going forward normal changes are best.

Oh really? That does make more sense. Should I have a substrate of some kind in the 10 gallon? Right now it's bare accept for a few terracotta pots.

The 10 gallon tank will be better for the fry for at least the first four months.

I got her into the 10 gallon take today without incident. I seeded the filter with media out of one of my canister filters. I also used the water from the main tank to fill it up. I plan on using the main tank for water changes as well.

As far as the 40 gallon goes I haven't got it yet. The 10 gallon buys me some time. Should be next week!

Tony makes good points, water from the main tank to get started is a must, Run the Sponge filter in the main tank for a day or two and yes catching her will be much easier if you do it as soon as you turn on the lights. If you are using the 40 as the Grow out just keep in mind that the small fry can get sucked into filters so if you are not running sponge filters in the 40 keep some type of mess sock over in the intake. Good luck and have fun.

sometimes when you go to catch the female she will spit the fry in tank or net you should try to catch her at night or right when you turn on lights also take the 10 gals of water right from the tank she is in and you should (seed) the filter in the parents tank if you have a sponge filter in there put that one in the 10 gal and put the new one in the parent tank good luck with them and how fast we go from 1 tank to 3

Wow! You guys are awesome! I'll bump this thread from time to time. My female is still holding, when she gets close to the glass I can get brief views of the babies inside her mouth. The eggs look like they are very developed. Sometimes I even see little eyes looking back at me.

I'm going to purchase a 10 gallon tank and move her over. Next week I'm getting a FREE 40 gallon tank with all the goodies from a co-worker of mine. I figure that should be a decent grow out tank.

I'll occasionally bump this thread with updates. Even if I screw this batch up...there will be others!

That is a Great read that was suggested. I personally don't strip my fish (just my choice) I just move the Holding female into a 10 gallon tank and let her spit when she is ready. I also give her some alone time after spitting so that she is not competing for food and can rebuild strenght. Water changes are a must once a week is good but with fry you might need more. the article says they are using an external hang on breeding box so water is flowing in an out of that from a much larger source of water. in my 10 gallons I use a sponge filter system and I change 50% of the water 3 times a week more if I'm feeling ambitious. to make the math really easy the is about 5 gallons it might take 10 minutes to do this. Breeding is fun consider joining the GCCA and participating in the BAP program. This is a great place to meet people get advice and ideas.

Congratulations this makes you a grandpa or grandma.

Take a look at this article -
www.gcca.net/index.php?option=com_conten...&id=288%3Ascubadiver

I would raise the fry for fun -

If you raise them and want to sell them you can place an ad on the classifieds -

Worth it is all in the experience and fun.

Typical fry might go for $2 to $4 each for 90 to 120 day old fry.

Maybe $5 each once they are six months old.

Mileage may vary greatly -

Blue Dolphin fry was created by fryz0r
This is my first post here. I apologize if this is in the wrong place. I purchased two blue dolphin's off of craigslist a few months ago. Turns out I got a male/female and they've spawned! I even got to witness the mating behavior. Very cool. I'll get to the point. I'm going to try my hand at raising these fry to a healthy size.

Any advice? Suggested reading material?

Also how could I go about selling these guys? I know gcca has swap meets. How hard would it be for me to unload them? Is it even worth it?

I hope to hear from you guys soon. Thanks for reading.
