I think the Costa Rica report is an error. I've spent over 200 hours in the rivers of Costa Rica doing research on the cichlids there and have been all over the country, doing most of my work on the Atlantic slope. If 'Cichlasoma' urophthalmus was found in Costa Rica, it would be on the Atlantic slope. I've not once seen a 'Cichlasoma' urophthalmus. My understanding is the southernmost range of 'Cichlasoma' urophthalmus is along the Moskito Coast of Nicaragua.

Most of the Costa Rican cichlid species are also found in Lake Nicaragua and its tributaries like the Rio San Juan, although the Costa Rican riverine populations differ a bit from the Lake Nicaraguan ones. 'Cichlasoma' urophthalmus doesn't occur in Lake Nicaragua and I would think that would be another reason it is quite unlikely to occur in Costa Rica.

Out of curiosity, what are you researching and where? Are you looking at the sub-species of 'Cichlasoma' urophthalmus? I'm a sophomore at California State University, Sacramento and am doing some phylogenetic and breeding behavioral work on the cichlids of Costa Rica in Dr. Ron Coleman's Evolutionary Ecology of Fishes Lab.

I have a confession. I'm a cichlaholic.

Hi,
I am a grad student and I need to collect Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Mayan cichlid, castarrica) from Central America, specifically Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and possibly Costa Rica (if they are indeed found there, reports are conflicting). Please tell me if anyone knows of sites where these fish are abundant and also if anyone has found them in Costa Rica.
Thanks so much.
