Warning - 55 Gallon Iron Stands

I hate when that happens. I went out and found a 40 long. Even with the 26 it was too tight.

Last month I purchased a new two shelf iron stand for housing two 55 gallon aquariums.  This is the common two shelf "scroll" stand sold by many pet stores that many GCCA members have used for dual 55 gallon installations in the past.  However, when I went to install the lower 55 gallon aquarium; it didn't fit.  My Aqueon filter couldn't fit under the top shelf; neither could my arm.

After a little investigation and contact with the manufacturer, it appears that there are actually two different brands of iron "scroll" fishtank stands available.  The brand I purchased only provides 24" of clearance between the top and bottom shelves.  This manufacturer does not recommend anything larger than a 40 gallon tank on the bottom shelf.

The second manufacturer (All Glass Aquarimum) provides 26" of clearance between shelves.  This is the brand that I have seen frequently used to hold two 55 gallon tanks.  (I don't know if this configuration is recommended or supported by the manufacturer, but the setup is common.)  However, I am not sure that they are avaialble new any longer.

The two brands of stands look almost identical, so I would suggest that you actually measure the clearance between the shelves before buying to make sure it is the right stand for your need.
