are you sure you want to go with sand? I've used black sand before and it's very hard to clean up

I use pool filter sand.  Comes in 50# bags and is reasonablly priced.  You'll need to look for a pool equipment supplier near you.

Not checked for facts.

I have used sand for years and I am taking all of it out of my tanks. Gravel looks better in my opinion.

I use silica sand-a dirty white/off-white color.  50# bags run $4-6 from any of the big box home improvement stores.  Look for it by the morter/cement in a bag/drywall compound area.

Too many fish?  Never.  Not enough tanks?  Always!

I think it will all depend on the look that you are trying to acheive

I am setting up a new tank, and want to go with sand. I've read several places that silver sand is the way to go. Where do you find it though? I've read on some sites that the play sand you get at the hardware store will work, but is it really safe to use? I was there today, and it didn't look like the right stuff either.

I've also read that the sand for reptiles will work, and it looked like what I am looking for but it was very expensive. What is a reasonably priced alternative?
