Bulu Point - correction to rick's notes.

Petro's are really fabulous fish to keep.

Fry are generally available from Old World for $7 - $15. Various types are available. Plan on a 125 gallon tank. you want to end up with 15 adults, if possible. Start with 30 fry. Expensive? Yes! Worth it? Yes!

Hard to get rid of the fry without shipping. People are terrified of these guys, but in general the reputation is wrong. They need space and they need a lot of conspecifics to keep the aggression down. They do great with the worst mbuna - petrotilapia.

Here are my notes from the meeting on the species she mentioned:

Sand Sifters
Xenotilapia spilopterus. Biparental mouthbrooder
Reganochromis calliurus Biparental mouthbrooder Asprotilapia leptura. Biparental mouthbrooder Enatiopus sp. Kilesa. Maternal mouthbrooder Callochromis pleurospilus , aggressive. Keep in large groups. 12+ in a four foot tank, maternal mouthbrooder Xenotilapia sp. "Papilio Sunflower" Biparental mouthbrooder, aggressive, crowd them. Males and females look identical.

Sand Sifters are hard to transport or ship when small. Make sure they ate at least 1.25 inch long.
Do smaller water changes on fry.

Gobies
- large tanks, herbivorous, bi-parental mouthbrooders
- ok to keep with tropheus
- can be kept in large groups for a while

Eretmodus sp. North / South.

Tanganicodus irsacae

Spathodus erythrodon

Spathodus marlieri - maternal mouthbrooder

Fry are very slow growing. Strip females. Hard to transport when under an inch.

Neolamprologus nigriventris - feed blackworms. Aggressive. Take 3 years to mature. Can feed red shrimp.

Removed other fish to get them to spawn. Quiet conditions.

Males turn black when spawning.

Fry are tiny. Typical spawn is 5-20 fish.

Fry are sensitive to transport.

Others
Limnotilapia dardeni 6 foot tanks. Maternal mouthbrooder. Good to keep with petros. Up to 10 inches. Veg or omnivore diet.

Ctenochromis horei - keep with tropheus, a more aggressive fish.

Simochromis diagramma - 10x aggressive than tropheus, 6 foot tanks

Petrochromis
6 foot tanks, big fish, like oscars. Hand feed your petros and then you can keep them with tropheus

Herbivores and very aggressive. Pack them. Maternal mouthbrooders. Get large, 8 inches or larger.

Petrochromis fasciolatus. School in thenwild. Least aggressive, groups of 6

Petrochromis trewavasae not as aggressive, 7-8 inches. Males and females look nice.

Petrochromis sp. "red fin Longola". Aggressive females. Small spawns

Petrochromis ephippium - very aggressive, various locales. Change colors rapidly from brown to yellow.

Petrochromis sp. "Red Mahale" . Docile for a petrochrmis. Fry are $50. Aka bull point. Found at 90 feet. Can feed higher level of protein. 9 inches. Larger, older males are redder. Feed shrimp sprinkled with paprika and garlic salt. Feed a variety of foods. Heavy feeders.

Petrochromis sp "giant" . 240g tank, fish gets up to 15".

Set up tank. Put a large flat rock on one side. Pile up rocks on other sides. Set up tracks so that there is an 8-10 foot run.

Fry are aggressive even when they have an egg sack.
