If $80 a month was the primary expense of fish keeping, it would be great

One thing I dont miss about fishkeeping - the power bills.
My monthly is now down to about $110 per month from the old fish days when I was routinely over $200.

I believe last year in June there was a 7-10% rate increase.

Mike
what is the added cost due to any Com Ed rate hikes? I am pretty sure there has been 1 or 2 in the last year. You add the % of hike, and what is your % of savings??

I finally remembered to look at my electric bill now that there are no more fish in the house.
Meter read date - 4/22
Last year usage 1947 kWh
This year usage 1472 kWh
Difference 428 kWh
Last year average daily temp 52
This year average daily temp 43
Bill last year $215
Bill this year $187
So I am using about 25% less electricity even though my gas furnace and fan motor are running more frequently.
I always thought I ran a pretty efficient room. One big air pump; heaters set to 75 degrees; mostly power compact fluorescent lights.

this is an interesting thread. last year at this time I converted my setup to sponges off of multiple hob and canister filters and really noticed a drop in my electrical bill. I tried to compute the savings using a similar approach, trying to see how quickly the new sponges and blower paid for themselves. I'll try and dig out those notes and match up to the formula here. Just looking at the raw electric bill dollars, I was convinced the $200-300 I spent (can't remember exact amount) was recovered by the end of last summer and the savings continues.
with water, I was a bit "green" environmentally a few years before green was ****. I run tubing from each tank with valves that, when open, run my water to my sump pit to start my water changes. when the tanks are 35%-50% drained, I close the valves. From the sump, the water runs to large recycle canisters that my wife then uses for her gardens. This obviously is only effective in two-three of our seasons, but its saves on water that she would ordinarly use gardening. the savings is offset with me as a precaution changing out my sump pump every two-three years to account for extended use.

:'( Yikes! My tank consumes 25,656 watts a day, and that doesn't include days where my chiller is running. :'(
