75g Filtration - 2 Fluval C4 or 1 Magnum 350 Pro?

8 years 11 months ago #32846 by decapod
Since you already have the Magnum, you could use my trick of converting it to run on Poret foam. That makes it far easier to maintain- almost "self cleaning". One of mine ran perfectly for well over a year between cleanings. It's on a 125 gallon tank along with an Aquaclear 110. I clean the Aquaclear at every water change, but the Magnum kept chugging along with no reduction in the flow rate for ages, so I just left it alone.

You can't put carbon in a Magnum that's been converted like this, but you could add a midsize HOB filter if you think that you really need to use carbon in your system..

Here's a link to where I originally wrote about doing the Poret conversion. I've been meaning to re-post it here, but still haven't gotten around to it. It's really photo heavy..

I have been running my 150g for years with 2 Cascade 300 HOB's.
I don't see the need for a canister.
The Cascade's don't have the reputation of the Aquaclears but I've never had a problem with them and they are half the cost!

I am a fan of both canisters and HOB. However, two HOB (two of any filter actually)gives you far more flexibility than one with media selection. Also, if you service them on an every other month cycle you'll never run the risk of killing the bio media.

Negative Karma for rule enforcement is a badge of honor :)

Oh it's good to hear from someone on the other side of the fence! Most of my online research yields "give me canister or give me death".

I despise canisters. Love HOB filters. Aquaclears are the best, IMO.

Good luck.

I'm new to tanks this big as well as canister filters. I one year old Magnum 350 Pro canister filter with two bio-wheels came with the tank, but I've always ran HOBs on my smaller tank and the Fluval C4 is top of the line. They would provide 500 GPH flow vs the Magnum's 350, but of course everyone seems so die-hard canister. Which would be better - any advice?
