Are you talking about the Hydor Koralia type pumps? If so I haven't had any problems with them. Although I probably wouldn't keep them with large Central and South America cichlids. The guard seems to come off a little to easy.

I'm new to Cichlid-keeping and am seeking information about water movement within a 55-gallon tank. Are propeller pumps, used to move the water, advisable with Cichlids?
