Digital Thermometers and Tongs on sale at Harbor Freight Tools

11 years 1 month ago #24815 by decapod
I went back to Harbor Freight on Dundee Road at 4:30 Sunday afternoon, and they had 9 thermometers left. The shelf tag still says that the sale ends Feb 2nd.  They also had a binful of the tongs left, even after I bought another 10 of them.  I forgot to check whether the sale on tongs has been extended past the 2nd, though..

Just a quick heads-up on the thermometers- it may be possible to trick them into giving odd readings by looking at infra-red reflections off the surface of the water or hot objects below the surface of the water.  So when you're getting a reading, don't aim them at the reflection of your light fixture, and don't aim them at your heater.

Harbor Freight Tools has non-contact digital thermometers on sale for $10.  You just aim them at the surface of the water instead of touching it, so you can use the same thermometer for many tanks without worrying about cross-contaminating all the tanks.  It's especially great for quarantine tanks.  The instructions say they're accurate to +/- 4 degrees F, but I think that's a typo.  Even if they meant +/-0.4F, mine are still better than that.  I tested 3 of them against each other and a Coralife digital, and they were usually all within a couple tenths of a degree.  Sometimes I saw 0.4 or 0.6 difference between the highest and lowest, but that was unusual.  I let them run for a few seconds so I can ignore any 'bouncy' readings.  The price is only good in stores, not online.  I went to the store at 940 W. Dundee Rd in Arlington Heights, IL - it's just a few blocks west of Tropical World.  They had the thermometers in a small locked case by the cash registers.  It looked like they has at least 20 of them left on Tuesday.  Here's the online page with a picture and the regular price:

They also have grabber-claw tongs on sale for $3.  These work at least as well as the 'Aqua-Tongs' I bought for $25ish awhile back, so I bought a whole bunch of them.  The hooked 'trigger' lets them hang on the back of tanks really nicely.  In the Dundee Rd. store, there's a whole pile of them in a bin near the back of the store.  They're in the center aisle.  In my picture, the blue tongs are the ones they're selling..

Both sales are good until Feb. 2nd.  Here's the store locator- I'm not sure if these prices are good everywhere, so you may want to call ahead:

If you call, the item number for the thermometer is 93983 and the tongs are 94870.
