My comment was not meant to be on the offense. Just blowing off steam as to my prior frustration with the product. Design failure was too strong a term. I'll be quiet.
No problem! I've also gotten upset over Eheim for the bum batch of feeders and the change that was made to the sealing rings. The orginals lasted for years but the new seals are only good for 6-12 months! I think the change sucks!!! But that flaw is easy to deal with and I consider it a trade off for an other wise well built filter in my experience.
Does anyone remember the old vortex diatom filters? (The ones with the mason jar bodies) Talk about a filter that loved to leak! You needed to keep the thig in a 5 gallon bucket while it was in use to collect the water that seeped out. A new sealing ring would help but not for long!

The Eheim seals wear out over time regardless of the lubricant. The petroleum lubricants will just speed up the process.
I'm not asking anyone here to use Eheim products. Please use what ever brand product you like! I'm just sharing my experience with running 30+ canister filters right now in other homes and businesses. The filters that give me the most trouble are the non-Eheim ones. That doesn't make the other filters bad, it just means I have less experience with the other filters and don't know their quirks.
I don't know of ANY canister filter that is without flaws. It's just a matter of picking and choosing which filter you are most comfortable with and gaining experience with it. Some flaws are easier to deal with then others though.

its not a design failure rubber seals only will last so long. like rubber seals or tires on your car they will only last so long before needing to be replacedDo NOT use vaseline or any other petroleum based lubricant. These will actually dry out the seals over time and cause them to shrink and then fail.
Eheim provides a lubricant with the filters when you by them and you should be able to find other non-petruliem based lubricants if you run out of the Eheim stuff.
Jeff
Hobby can get complicated enough - a complete failure of a filter's design should not be dependent upon the subtilty as to whether the seal gasket is lubed with a petroleum-based product.
