Joe clearly knows what he is doing. In the event of a tornado or earthquake, I would hop inside that stand for safety.

Check out the stand in these pictures. I built one like it for a 75g and it would support a tank I think.

make a 1 1/2" deep slice 3 1/2" down and then rip 1 1/2" off the end and rest the 2x4 into the notch

How would you notch 2x4s. By making an iner layer and an outer layer?

Notch the 2x4's

How would I position it so it wouldn't be held up by the screws?

How would I position it so it wouldn't be held up by the screws? Should I build it so that the verticle 2x4s are on top of the horizontal 2x4s, instead of having the horizontal 2x4s inbetween the verticle 2x4s. Sorry this maybe a little confusing to read, but I think I have the jest of what you are saying. Correct me if I am wrong.

Not as hard as it may seem. Just make sure that your table top is supported properly. By properly I mean not with screws. There should be 2x4's supporting the weight of the tank not the screws.
Mine took me a while because of weather and cash restraints but I did it and am very happy with the results.
