Thanks for all comments. Getting a battery backup system next week from Jehmco and will hunt for a sealed deep cycle battery shortly after. 

I have an APC Smart UPS 1000XL.  It will drive my pump for about an hour and a half.

There was recently a thread on generators on RC.  Hope that helps you.

I have a Tripp Light power inverter hooked up to a sealed deep cycle marine battery.  It is set to power the airpump in the event of a power failure.  The battery should be good for the approximately 36 hours in the event of lights out.

I am going to do a natural gass whole house generator this spring.  I am only going to run it to the first floor - we'll sleep in the dark.  I have a zoned furnace / ac system so I can do that pretty easily.

I'd like to ride your coattails on info you get doing the natural gas generator.  Maybe I can go back to the negotation table with Mrs. Baldtaxguy with some facts.
