Cleaning used air stones.

where is ithe arguing?  You wanna see some real arguing?  Start talking about hybrids.

i dont know what the big deal seems to be and why people have to argue about it this thread sounds kinda stupid.

but last week i was cleaning some stuff up in a five gal bucket with a splash of bleach to 5 gal of water (prolly 4-5 cap fulls). and my air stone was pluged up in my 125 so i thru that in there too. let it soak over night, removed rinsed let dry and that night i put it back in the tank and it was as new. less time in it then a water change......

If you don't factor in your time sure cleaning them is cheaper, but I don't work for free. 

I understand not factoring in your time on the cleaning side of idea, but almost the same amount of time is spent replacing them, so why not clean them.

Either you can clean the air stones really quickly, or are really really slow to take the new out of a bag and plug it in.


what dose the extra blech or vinger do to the take water if you cleaning them so quickly and dont get it all off?

true, but i am kinda the reduce, reuse recycle person with the fish hobby, meaning the cheapest i can get and get the most out of it. and the air stones are used but not to the point of crumbling. they were used for about 8 months in a heavy populated tank. Thanks to everyone for the help, if anyone has any other "miracle" solutions to cleaning airstones go on ahead.

After the vinegar you can just rinse off the stones.

And I do see a point to cleaning the stones. Sure it is a lot of work, but if you replace them with new stones you have to go through all the same motions that you would if you cleaned them.

What you could do is buy new stones and replace the old ones with new ones. After you put the new ones on, clean the old ones. That way you can just switch them out when you think you need to clean the airstones.

If you are saying it IS worth it then yes i agree because when you have 100 plus stones the price adds up. i see what everyone means with vinegar and the other substances that dont react because you dont wont to ruin the air stone. Once they have been vinegered, do you just rinse with water? thanks much
