Where can I get.........

11 years 6 months ago #22279 by aquaticclarity
I have two 125's without any cross bracing.  Both are older All-Glass brand tanks.  The one is much heavier because of thicker glass then the other, but both have a mitered frame without any center braces.

Originally the design for tops had a large center piece of glass that spanned the tank front to back in the middle.  On the two ends of that pain of glass that faced the left and right sides of the tank there where plastic pieces that look like an "h" on there sides that were attached.  The piece of plastic formed a shelf along with two sides of the tank frame that would support a hinged glass top just like the modern ones.  So you ended up with a full glass top that has a solid center pane and a hinged glass top on both ends.

I have one of these in use if anyone wants/needs pictures to help understand what I tried to explain.

Hey I came across this thread and I had the same problem. I got the old school 125 with 1/2" green tint glass. I am assuming you have the same type. What I did was get a top for a newer style 125. I ended up having to crack the trim piece on one corner to get it to fit on the glass but I now have a tank with two braces in the middle and I use three pieces of glass on the top. Like i said i did crack the corner to get it on but I would do it again any day to get the braces. makes me feel soooooo much better to have them.

Your best bet would be a custom glass shop. 2 pieces long enough to span the length. Make sure you tell the glass shop to buff the edges so that they aren't sharp. You can get the plastic hinge either online or at most LFS. If the store doesn't have it chances are they will gladly order it for you.

This should be a fairly cheap fix.

Ok, I've had a 100g tank in the past with no center brace. I was told it was an old tank.I called a LFS to see if he had any of these tops and he had just found a top 2 days before when cleaning up a storeroom. It was a center piece of glass with a piece of black plastic trim on it to form a ledge for the other two glass pieces to fit into.So at the ends were the tops with the split and plastic hinge, and the center was a solid piece of glass with the trim on the two sides. I can assume that I can make somthing, and I just may have to, but I'd like to try and locate a correct top.

I have seen the 4 foot topsin the past, but a 125 would be a 6 foot tank, unless it is a really deep tank or 4' x 2' x 2' which is actually a 120.

I have 75 gallons without center braces. One has a huge plastic lid, with openings in it and such, but it all rests on the outer trim. I think thats what you need, I don't know if they are made anymore.

I am trying to picture the tank. So it's 6 ft long with no center braces. You cant use 2 36 inch tops without a centerbrace because it would fall into the tank when you opened it.

You could go to a glass shop and have 2 pieces cut and put them together with duct tape or with the plastic hinges from other glass tops.

What about creating a center brace on the tank by using either a peice of glass or hard plastic and lay it across the width of the tank. You could secure it to the tank with stainless steel screws, pop rivits silicone/ epoxy or plastic screws. This woud allow you to use 2-36" glass tops.

I'm thinking that a 6 ft tank without a center brace would weight as much as a small car.
