used magnum canister filter

12 years 8 months ago #10667 by rm-slover
I have a magnum and I use it on my 55 tanganyikan show tank along with the largest size of this filter

www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_disp...9+16729&pcatid=16729

I only use the magnum canister because it is larger than the HOT magnums I have. On my other 55 Mbuna tank with about 60 fish I have the largest NEW marineland canister on that tank along with the filter linked to above.

There are a lot of better filters put there than the magnum canister and after having used the magnum canister for a while I woulnt recomend it for a tank over 30 gallons. But I do really like the new marineland canister filter

i have a magnum and a rena XP3 or 4 0n my 125 basicly the only thing i used the mag for is to keeps water moving at the other end of the tank and added filtration, i like the rena its easy to clean and they have a ton of dif. medias you can use in it......and what bob said about air pockets it took 4-5 days till my mag ran to full force becuase of all the air it had in it but i didnt get any directions with it, i too bought it used.....

Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can't eat it or hump it. Pee on it and walk away.

When you say just the filter cartridge, is that all?  Or are the hoses and all the gaskets there as well?  I used magnums for a long time,  and will never use them again.  There are way better filters out there nowadays.  The magnums are messy and are prone to air pockets.

Also,  one magnum is not enough for a 125 with a decnet bio-load.  If it were me, and I could afford it.  I would buy a Rena Filstar XP4 and an AC110.  Costly, but deadly effective!  The renas are foolproof and absolutely no mess and extremely quiet as well.  And the AC's are in my opinion the best filter you can buy for the price.  I strongly recommend kensfish.com/ as a place to buy the Rena.  He is a top notch vendor and his prices are great.  $169 for the XP4 vs. $240 at Petsmart. If money is tight,  go and get the AC110 and run it with the magnum until you can step up to the Rena.

By the way,  if you need a part or two for the magnum let me know.  I have TONS of extra parts laying around.

You will almost definitely need more filtration then the magnum alone. I don't use Magnums so I don't know much about them, but I'm sure someone here can help with setup.

I picked up a used magnum along with my 125gal. But I need some info on how to set it up and what kind of media I should be using. It came with just the filter looking cartridge. Will that filter be enough to filter the 125gal or will I need a additional filter?
