Well I doubt I have 30 years left but I do appreciate all the great information. Want to come over and identify some Mbuna, I think, since I have not been able to get any decent pictures? I probably don't have 50k to spend either; more's the pity

Interesting to know. This canister comes with a prefilter. I usually turn everything off when I do the water changes since I have powerheads running my under gravel filter and it doesn't take much for them to stick out of the water. I will keep a close eye on how the filter is running. You are a treasure trove of great information :) If you lived closer I'd have you come over and identify these darn fish so I would know which ones to try and place in new homes.

Eheim makes great filters, no doubt.

Make sure the inlet is below the level where you normally drain the tank down when you do water changes - that way you wont need to turn the filter off and on.

There are some prefilters out there - dont use them. They clog.

Keep an eye on the water return to your tank - as it slows down, it is indicating the filter is getting clogged.

Now the bad news - canisters are promote more nitrates. Gunk gets trapped in them and decays. You will need to stay on top of it and clean it periodically - once every one or two months, at least - maybe more frequently.

good luck.

Nah, I've already spent the money and other then the nitrates it should help keep my tank healthy. I've never had a filter, of any kind, that was so quiet. Too bad it doesn't fit under my tank but it doesn't look horrible where it is so lesson learned. If I ever decide to do something like this again I measure first before buying. Thanks for all your help

I kinda wish I had known that before buying it. The darn thing is the size of a small air conditioner and doesn't fit in the stand under my tank. It has to sit along side it :( Oh well, I guess I shouldn't have an ammonia or nitrite problem anyway. Does the For Sale forum work on here?

The big eheim wont fix your nitrate problem. Only reducing your fish count will do that.

I never thought of rechecking the temp during fill ups but that makes perfect sense. TY so much for bringing it up. I'm hoping that I can go to once a week water changes soon since I am setting up my new eheim 2080 today. Has anyone ever mentioned those filters are BIG!!!!! Daily water changes are a drag :) but, on the good side, I haven't lost any fish (other than the 3 that died the day after the move). These Mbuna are a very hardy bunch of fish. I'm really glad I joined the club; I'm getting some great information.

50% changes are the max I ever did. anything else is just too much time. Dont worry about over using cloram-x. It is pretty safe even at or 3x the stated recommended use.

Just pour the powder into the tank. it dissolves pretty quickly and then turn on the faucet.

With a 50% change, consider checking the temp periodically. You will run down your water heater and the end water will be cooler than the beginning water.
