AHHH

Glass cages! An aquarium that really shouldn't be filled with water.

Hope your fish are ok.

been a while since I had a chance to get on the forums.  Things have been tough for my macs recently.  They began droping eggs on a tile I had in the tank.  They always disappeared, but it was looking promising.  Then their crappy glass cages tank cracked for no reason. So they are hemmed up in a 55 now.  here is a picture from a while ago.

So the Pe. maculatus have been doing well in their grow out tank.  Nothing has changed but their size and the reds have come in in their fins.  The other day I came in and two of them are showing colors I have not seen.  Bright red fins, shiny cold upper body , and a really dark chin area, almost black.  These two have cleaned a hole in the sand down to the glass and are defending it very well.  This sounds very much like spawning to me, but the fish are maybe 4" long!  I thought they would be bigger than that before I seen any courtship.  I will post pics soon.

Interesting. Do they protect the spawn as well, or do the other fish usually knock them off their breeding territory?

I have a confession. I'm a cichlaholic.

I think one of the biggest problems with Paretroplus is people try to breed them in pairs, like Central American cichlids.  I have a few customers that are breeding menerambo and maculatus regularly by keeping them in groups (8-10) in large tanks (200 gal+).  They all school together, until a pair is ready to spawn.  At that point, they leave the group, defend a small territory, and tend to their eggs.  Once they are done, they jump right back into the school without ever fighting.

The nourissati are another story.  They're just plain wicked!

That's good to hear. Hopefully, you'll grow them up and spawn them. It would be great to get any of the paretropls circulating in the hobby.

right now they are about 1.5"-2".  They are looking pretty good, all eating well and begging for food.  I have been reading that macs are pretty tame compared to other partroplus species.  I guess only time will tell.
