Yes, I think it's worth to join. First as you already said it's cheap and many amazing folks with great knowledge are here. Even if we don't have regular meeting with speakers now, we meet every month for bag exchange which is for members only. We have monthly online presentation which is open to the public, but maybe in the future recordings of these presentations will be available for members only. We have also rare fish auction for members only (the last one was online). It's true that forum is inactive, mostly because of FB, but with all that moves FB makes (like closing sites without any reason) who knows if we don't go back to traditional forum.
There doesn't seem to be a "general" or "welcome" section, so please excuse my mistake if I am posting in the wrong section.
I'm trying to figure out if it's worth joining the GCCA given that I live in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. It seems like a pretty strong and active community - if not a particularly active forum. Because the forum is so quiet, I'm not sure it is going to be a good place to get input, plus I can post here without being a paid member.
I'm planning to put together two tanks in the near future: a 42 gal, and a 300 gal. I'd like to get fish for them from other hobbyists, and perhaps that's the best reason to join? I'd probably be willing to drive out for a couple of meetings/swaps a year. I think the other thing is a desire to be part of a community of folks who have similar interests. That said, I'd be pretty far outside of the areas for some of that I'd think.
Does the GCCA have many members from as far a field as I am? Is this just a silly idea?
