Anytime you see an ad for wild African fish or F1 fish, be leery that they truly are wild-caught (or 1st generation of wild-caught parents for F1's). Further, be even more leery of any person or local company that tells you they're an importer. There are only a handful of importers in the Chicago area and all of them have commercial locations.
I speak from experience. I owned a "fish warehouse" for 5 years. Many of you may be familiar with it. Anyway, we were direct importers of fish & other livestock. We imported from Bali, Jakarta, Columbia, Peru, Thailand, Malaysia, etc. over the years. However, Africa was just too expensive. Even with literally hundreds of tanks, we would have had to import quite a few fish (would always have had to be at least a dozen boxes in any importation) to make it worthwhile. Our client & prospect base was just not big enough for that. Granted, we eventually sold mostly marine fish/corals/inverts, but we sold an awful lot of freshwater fish over the years too.
Now, all of that being said, it's possible to buy from an actual importer out of state (usually L.A. or Florida), but make sure they're reputable. If in doubt, as to see papers. Packing list & import license copies aren't that much to ask for.
p.s. the fish warehouse I used to own is still in biz & is quite frankly much better than it ever has been. I encourage visiting them at least once.
