She either spit or swallowed the eggs.  Perhaps they weren't fertilized.  I'll have to wait for round two.

I am thinking about stripping her on Monday, if she holds that long.  I'd like them to hold long term, but I'd also like fry.  From what I've read on forums it seems like the Congo types don't hold as well as the northern variants.

Hey Bob -

How'd this work out for you?  Last night, I noticed I have a female holding.  Did she hold for 21 days?  Also I am not sure when my female started to hold.  Did you let her stay with the group or put her in a maternity tank?

Here is the article on frontosa float. cichlid-forum.com/articles/frontosa_floating.php

A quick summary on the article:

Since frontosa are bethnic species (from deeper water) and have adapted to eat off the surface of our tanks, many frontosa will suffer from FLOAT some point in their life. Float is basically air getting swallowed and digested when the frontosa take huge bites of food on the surface. The Float usually passes through the fish but in extreme cases the fish need to be popped and glued back together.

Her mouth will be open - typically and in my experience.

If she goes in head first, you can induce a little bit of float.  It will typically pass, but why chance it.

I think I read that on cichlid forum - made sense.

I agree, more #5, and why return her to tank tail first?

the black and white fronts are pretty good holders, even when young.

I would leave her be.  When you get to 21 days or so, let's discuss.  You dont need to flush a frontosa.  The mouth is so large, as are the fry, that 90% of them will just fall out.

1) get a several quart specimen container.  8 - 10 inches in diameter.
2) fill it with 4 - 6" of water.  make sure there is plenty of space at so that when you dunk the fish, you do not overflow.
3) place the container on a towel on the floor.
4) find a bic pen with a cap.
5) grab beer, take a swig
6) wet your hands.  catch the fish with a net.
7) I hold the front so that the head is exposed between my thumb and forefinger.
8) use the bic pen cap to gently open the mouth.  She may do so on her own.
9) apply a little more pressure when the mouth opens with your thumb / forefinger and dunk her several times.  Most fry will come out.
10) return her to the main tank tail first.

It is very easy with fronts.
