-- I thought I would bump this thread because I am curious what type of Tanganyikans we have roaming around the Chicagoland area. There are always some gems to be found at the gatherings, whether it be a meeting or a swap, or even the occasional auction - though these seem to have the fewest Tanganyikans of the three. I do find, however, that the majority of the fish offered at swap meets are Malawians. Fans of the South and Central Americans, I feel your pain. And don't even mention the cichlids of Madagascar. They are as endangered in our area as they are in their homeland. At least that is how it seems to me.
-- In any case, here are the Tanganyikans I am currently keeping:
- Neolamprologus signatus - I have two pair, plus about twenty others of breeding age.
- Neolamprologus pulcher - I just picked up a nice pair of these from Bruce's shop, Broadstreet Pets.
- Neolamprologus buescheri Kachese - I have a breeding trio of these soon to be gone. I also have twenty or so fry.
- Neolamprologus brichardi "Albino" - I have a 40 breeder teeming with fry, probably around two-hundred.
- Neolamprologus nigriventris - My two breeding pair are housed side by side in 40 gallon breeders. The eight juveniles I have are already spoken for.
- Variabilichromis moorii - I got some of these very cool Tangs from Mario. They are about 1.5" now, but will eventually be breeders.
- Cyphotilapia gibberosa Mpimbwe - There are ten of these guys nearing 2". I will probably only keep them short term as I do not really have enough space for them as adults.
- Cyprichromis sp. 'jumbo leptosoma' Nkondwe - There are two distinctly colored males in this locale variant. I have a growing group of around twenty fish that are just beginning to produce fry.
- exLamprologus meleagris - I just sold my breeders, but have a number of young still.
- exLamprologus ocellatus "Gold" - I have a single breeding pair and six younger individuals I hope to get spawning.
- exLamprologus similis - There are a trio and a pair in side by side 10 gallon tanks plus a healthy number of fry of varying sizes.
- Enantiopus melanogenys - This group consists of ten fish that are growing faster than I anticipated they would. God willing, I will eventually have fry from them.
- Altolamprologus calvus Chaitika - I have six fish nearing adulthood. It looks to be three males and three females, but I am uncertain about that.
- Altolamprologus calvus "Yellow" - I also have six of these guys. They are at the same stage as the Chaitika, but I believe there are only two males. And there seems to be a female with a clutch of eggs in a shell.
- Xenotilapia papilio Tembwe Deux - I have what was supposed to be a pair. Short of venting them, I would say they are of the same gender based solely on their behavior toward one another.
- Lepidiolamprologus nkambae - I have a small group of fry I kept from the last spawn of my breeders which I recently sold.
- Neolamprologus gracilis - I bought a group of six fry with hopes of spawning them.
- Neolamprologus caudopunctatus - I only managed to get three of these on my first attempt, but I will likely pick up a few more to get some breeders.
-- I am truthfully surprised at the number of species I have. I didn't realize how many until I started writing them down. Everybody chime in. What else is out there?
