Don't know of any articles for venting, but you should be able to sex featherfins visually.  The males are the ones trying to kill everything in the tank.  The females are the ones smart enough to run.

On a serious note, look for rounded fins on the females.  Males also get MUCH longer ventral fins with very obvious tips.  I used to leave extra males in there just to take heat off the females.  If you are refering to Boops, my females would occasionally turn black (not jet black like the males, but dark) so keep that in mind.
