How long ago did you introduce the assassins? It will take some time but they will do the job. You may want to add few more. This is my favorite option because they don't completely eradicate other snails but keep their numbers to a minimum. And it is quite useful to have some snails so they can scavenge all sorts of dead matter.

The only way i ever eradicated them was to pull the gravel / sand and replace it.

If you go this route, I would move the tropheus first. I did it with mbuna once - no issue. With tropheus you may have a chalenge.

-- What type of snails are infesting your tank?
-- I don't know about compatibility with Tropheus (I've never kept them), but there are a number of fish that will eat snails including but not limited to loaches, many of the Lake Victoria cichlids, and most of the Astatotilapia species. The Astatotilapia seem very adept at eating snails and are not even daunted by the persistent Malaysian burrowing snails.
