Can Somebody I.D. My Frontosa?

9 years 2 weeks ago - 9 years 2 weeks ago #29359 by potus
I don't know enough about them to say where it is from.  But if others feel that way then there is some doubt.  If you aren't interested in breeding them and you have a plan if fry occur then I don't see the problem.

And Kegger, I just feel like there is beauty in the creation of any fish.  I don't understand how people allow for some hybrids (OB Peacocks) but then turn and say others are not allowed.  As long as people are responsible and honest in what their fish are I see no reason in enjoying your fish.  The worry for me is people down the road not being honest.

So you too believe he is not a Burundi? I am really not into it to breed. If they did I could use them as feeders for my Central's I guess?

I personally am not swayed by the purity arguments, though I understand the reasons, and because of this I do not find it irresponsible to sell these fry as long as the person you are selling to understands what they are buying.  But that could still be unfair to someone else down the road...

There is a push in the hobby to keep bloodlines pure and hybridization to a minimum if at all.  This becomes the reason why your fish should not be put together, because you can be mixing the bloodlines.  To me It should be fine to place them together but you have to have a plan on what to do with the fry, if mating does happen.  If the fry do not grow then I see no problem.

Beyond any normal type of cichlid aggression there should not be physical problems placing the fish together.  Some will say they should not be together because of the worry about the offspring of your fish.  But in the end it becomes your decision, just keep in mind the responsibility you have should your colony start to grow.

Ok. Thanks. Makes sense. I really did not intend to breed these. Should I still seperate them?

He means the interorbital band that goes across the face of the fish from eye to eye.

Exactly.  Burundi's front most stripe just goes up onto the nuchal hump.  The eye mask looks flat and goes horizontally across the "face".

Not checked for facts.

I have a confession. I'm a cichlaholic.

Definitely not a Burundi.  Burundi don't have the eye mask(like Robin of Batman and Robin). To me it looks like some type of Tanzania type or perhaps Zambian.  It could even be a Congo type (aka Zaire) but the blue in the picture looks lighter like a Tanz or Zambian.

Thanks for the response. I am friends with a manager at a local petshop in my area. Someone had brought this guy in for donation. He was passed on to me free of charge so I took him. He was nowhere near as blue when I got him. I am more into Central's but had another tank and really like Frontosa. I started out with this one and picked up some Burundi at the swap. Should have done my research, had no idea there were so many variants. The color on this guy compared to the rest just makes me wonder? Any chance he is a Burundi? I know you said it's almost impossible. What would be your guess?
