Replied by Sal on topic where can I find this stuff?

I,m just about ready to stock my new 75g malawi tank. I would like to use holey rock, but it's $3.00lb at my LFS. Can any of you give me a local landscaper or quarry that has it at a better price?
I'll travel 20 miles any direction from Schaumburg.

thanks :-X

We have coral rock around here its in the yards, etc I sent a friend via postal service 4 large pieces 12 inches . It cost more in shipping than at his area pet store.

Thanks Eden,

I did notice that difference. My LFS has both for same price,so now its just a matter of preference.

$3.00 is not too bad.  It is a lot less than live rock for a saltwater tank.  I have bought a couple small pieces on Ebay that I underbid and won, and combined a few, but overall, it is better to see exactly what you like at the store.  Call around to all the stores, and try the saltwater forums too.  Be sure you are getting Texas holey rock and not lace rock if that is indeed what you want.  some people use the terms interchangeably.  I believe Texas HR has the large holes, some are 1" diameter, whereas lace is more like a sponge rock with lots of smaller holes.

True texas holy rock is only found and sold in Texas. So anyone up here who has it has paid to truck it up here so that is where the expense comes from. Most landscapers up here don't carry it as its not of any landscaping use.

There are some ebay dealers that sell it cheap, but then you have to pay crazy amounts of shipping. If you really want it you'll probably have to bite the bullet and shell out the cash. You may also be able to find it through the classifieds but it generally doesn't last long.
