-- Not at all, mbuna are rock dwelling cichlids. So are P. nyererei.

The tank is set up for tanganyikans right now with a wall of rockwork running the length, takes up half the floor. A little much for the new group?

-- I think you'll be fine with either L. caeruleus or Pundamilia nyererei, or both. The Labidochromis will likely be the mildest fish in the group. I would think you'll want plenty of rocks in the tank to break up sight lines and give weaker fish places to hide. I wouldn't get too many of the nyererei because if you have more than two males in that size tank they might kill one another. Maybe not, but I'd suggest no more than 6 of them. The yellow labs you could probably cram in there, maybe another dozen. If you did both you'd be in the range of 30 fish in a 55 gallon. Not really an ideal scenario, but with proper filtration and maintenance, you can probably pull it off. My main concern comes back to the demasoni. I think you'll find they are very pugnacious and mostly intolerant of one another.

Funny, that's just what I was thinking. A dozen damasoni and either leleupi or yellow labs. I think that the leleupi would get along better, but I have them in another set up and the labs would be something new. How many do you think?

-- One thing to consider when planning a tank for P. demasoni, is the fact that they can be brutal toward one another. I would suggest you get the largest group you are comfortable purchasing. I read once (can't recall where) that a group with a minimum of 12 fish will help alleviate the stress on the weakest fish. I took that advice when purchasing my first P. demasoni. That group is now housed in a 75 gallon aquarium with a mix of other cichlids including Neolamprologus leleupi, Neochromis omnicaeruleus, Pseudotropheus sp. 'acei', and a few young OB peacocks. They do not bother the other fish overly much, but the males at the top of the hierarchy wreak havoc on the sub-dominant males and the females. They were not that way at first, but as they get older they seem to get more aggressive. They are all in the 2.5-3" range now, which is basically adult size. They've been spawning for months, but I've lost a few individuals to abuse - I believe I am down to 8 or 9 of them.
-- The orange N. leleupi make a striking contrast to the blues of the demasoni and they seem to ignore one another most of the time. Another cool combination I have seen in photos and videos is Labidochromis caeruleus, a yellow and black mbuna.

I'm planning a change in one of my 55's and central to the plan is P. damosoni. I'm casting about for colorful tankmates and would appreciate suggestions.
