Also with whatever filtration you use just make sure your maintenance is kept up as well. IF you wanted HOB filters you could use 2 of those along with the 405. I would think that would be sufficient. This is the set up i use on my 90G tank. (2 penguins and a fluval 305).

You will find a bunch of different numbers for filtration. The labs will max out at 4-5 inches.

I would suggest about 10 times turnover, which means you should be rated for about 750 gallons per hour.

With that # of cichlids, how many GPH in filtration is recommended? Rather than use a HOB due to space limitations, would a Fluval 405 and another smaller canister filter or internal filter be adequate?

kind of.

Demasoni are a beautiful fish, and when paired with Yellow Labs int a tank with some rock work make for an awesome tank. Demasoni are aggressive fish but they are only aggressive against their own kind or a fish of a similar color pattern. to fend off this aggression you need a large number of Demasoni. I kept a group of 18 Demasoni in a 55 gallon tank with no issues (deaths).

In a 75 you could easily put some rock work. 15 demasoni and 12-15 Labs as long as you have good filtration.

I would not recommend keeping Demasoni in a group of less than 8 fish and the more fish the better.

A few people have mentioned Demosoni with yellow labs but from what I have read, Demosoni's can be a handful. I'm not looking for a tropical community tank, but on the other hand don't want to pick out dead fish due to their aggression level.

Are the stories overblown concerning Demosoni's?

I am selecting types of mbuna for a new 75g setup and would appreciate any opinions on compatibility - I want to start my first tank with some of the more "peaceful" mbuna and still have good color etc.

I like yellow labs and then open from that point for suggestions - enjoy the site - good information thruout - thanks.

You definitely do not need the additives for a Malawian tank.  My group of demasoni doesn't care that I don't use salt and there is always a female or two holding eggs.

Not checked for facts.

I was thinking of having 15 -20 with yellow labs and another type or two of a good color contrast and compatibility etc.

Other than declorinator for water changes with Chicago water, is it necessary to use other additives (salt etc. - the pet stores seem to push for the extras and not sure it they are needed. Thanks.
