I agree. The stain if from red algae growing at the line of the substrate. I haven't tried it, but one manufacturer has a Red Algae Stain removal product. The bottle says it is for Marine tanks, but when I talked to the rep at Aquatic Experience, the said it works just fine in freshwater, too.

What kind of snails?
As far as I know snails do not produce anything in colors. Brown stains are probably some kind of algae. There is hundreds of different kinds in more than just green color.

So I say to her……There is plenty of stuff at the house for the baby to eat!!!! I REALLY need this fish……

Have many snails in my tank - uninvited but they do a good job of controlling the algae. I've noticed red ink-like stains around the perimeter of the tank near the gravel line. Does anyone know what these are? Do snails emit red ink or something?
