First off, the fish in question is not a Yellow Labidochromis but a male Metriaclima lombardoi (commonly called kenyi).

I agree, it sure seems like from the photo and what you are describing that it is an issue with the swim bladder. Swim bladders are tricky and I've found most of the time prove to be fatal or at least not fixable.

It can happen for a variety of reasons. Best case scenario is hope your fish is constipated and that it somehow is affecting the swim bladder. Epson salts are a good diuretic and very safe to use in an aquarium. Tablespoon/5 gallons is what I would dose.

Another common way it can be caused is by injury. For example, big cichlids (like 10" or so) can cause lots of internal damage to each other when you move them if they are together in the same container and run into each other. There are a lot of ways it could suffer an internal injury from a fight with another fish or simply running into an aquarium object.

It also sometimes happens inexplicably. I highly doubt that there is a serious issue in your tank, especially if all the other fish look good and healthy. Sometimes fish simply just have issues. I've heard people try to puncture the swim bladder to save a fish with a needle, and have tried it, but the fish subsequently died after that. As it's a very hard condition to cure I usually just euthanize the fish as the mortality rate is high and if it does survive the quality of life for the fish is going to be diminished.

Best of luck to you and your fish

I have a confession. I'm a cichlaholic.

I had a similar problem with one of my Labs. I thought he was going to die. I isolated him in another tank and like magic he came back to his normal self. I notice this condition came about after fighting. He is back with the others now and is doing fine.

My first guess is something to do with his swim bladder. As for fixing the problem I'm not sure.
