Here is a link to the paper. You can download it from here. It's a largeish file so it will take some time.

If you haven't started doing it yet, start calling your Paralabidochromis sp. "Rock Kribs" Paralabidochromis sauvagei. They correspond and it is the proper name for them.

Skip,

From what I got out of the paper, the author believes that P. sp. "Rock Kribensis" corresponds to the old description of Pty. sauvagei and the fish in the hobby going around as Pty. sauvagei is really an undescribed species and therefore the new species, Ptyochromis fischeri.

The "Rock Krib" group is not every member of Paralabidochromis, for example, Rock Kribs and Paralabidochromis chilotes are two very different fish. Rock Krib group deals with the Paralabidochromis sp. "Rock Kribensis" and its many location varients, most likely a few will represent different species. So are all Rock Kribs Paralabidochromis sauvagei, no, but most likely the location variant or variants the author did look at do represent the fish. So probably at least one of the fish currently called Paralab. sp. "Rock Kribensis" is really Paralab. sauvagei.

Your second part with Ptychromis being a junior synonym I see as this, and it is complicated. The type species for the genus Ptychromis was Pty. sauvagei. That fish is found by the author to be Paralbidochroms sp. "Rock Kribensis", therefore, Ptychromis would be a junior synonym, but the fish we call Pty. sauvagei  in the hobby (now Ptychromis fischeri) is the new type species for the genus Ptychromis, therefore the Pty. sp. "Hippo Pointe Salmon" is still a member of the Ptychromis genus because a new type species was designated for it.

Hope that helps,

If someone disagrees, I'd like to hear your opinion, that is another purpose of this new section, you can debate on what you agree or disagree with in the world of taxonomy.

Sam,

After reading parts of the paper I know why I'm not a taxonomist -- too
confusing. I got the impression that the author is not sure whether to
include H. sauvagei within the Paralabidochromis 'rock krib" group  or
rather to give it its own generic name.

Something I found interesting was the quote (p.21) in which the author
states that Ptychromis is a junior synonym of Paralabidochromis. Would, by
extension, P. sp." Hippo Pointe Salmon" also be called a "Rock Krib?"
