I ended up building a rock wall against the back of the tank and creating a cave system in the tank. The dominant pair has already taken up residency in the largest of these caves. The coloring also seems to have returned to the juveniles. I'm thinking it was probably due to a combination of not having enough hiding spots beforehand and adjusting to the new tank. I also lowered the temperature of the water to around 77-78 degrees for the time being which also greatly enhanced their color. Definitely a learning experience. Thank you guys :)

That temp seems a little high. Might have something to due with the coloring.

Hello all. I'm somewhat new to the cichlid world and recently had a spawn of convict cichlids. Up until recently, I had them in a 29 gallon tank and they were doing completely fine. However, after moving them into a much larger tank since the fry were getting bigger, all but the dominant pair have lost most of their coloring. I'm wondering if this is possibly due to another spawning, or are they just trying to get used to the new tank? All water params are optimal for them and I'm trying to keep the temp between 79 and 80 F to discourage spawning. If this continues, I may have move the fry back into their old habitat, though i don't want to since it is far less real estate.
