Tankmates for Hypsophrys nicaraguensis

11 years 11 months ago #12488 by nuth88
My Nics were breeding in my 6' 220 gallon tank. They kept all my Geos, Sajica and my Pearsi in 1/3 of the tank while they owned the remaining 2/3. They are great when they are not breeding, but when they are, they are crazy. Great Fish.

;D

Do you guys think I can keep these guys with Geophagus sp. "Tapajos Orange Head" in a 125?
I have 3 orange heads that are 4-5 inches.

Thanks

Nics are great. For there size they are very peacefuland somewhat shy, and a very pretty species.

Those are pretty good size fish. Big fish= big waste. If you were going to keep them with another species, 125 them.

Also, you are trying to breed them? Bigger the tank, the better, because nics are not overly aggressive, they may have trouble defending a spawning territory from the other fish. Also, the Nic eggs are non-addhessive, so a cave or something relatively closed is necessary so the eggs don't roll around, and if they don't have that as theirs, i don't think they will have a successful spawn.

As far as other species to keep with them, maybe some gentle Geos like brasiliensis or Steindachneri (Won't fight for same beeding territory., peceful mbuna like Yellow labs or Acei, a malawi hap that's peaceful, maybe some young VC10 or red empress.

I have an adult pair of these fish around 8-10". I would like to add another species of fish to the tank. What would be a good choice? Currently they are by themselves in a 75 gallon.  I can move them to a 125 if need be.

Thanks
