These were collected by a researcher at UCLA named Terrance Lee out of the Rio Cabuyo, Costa Rica which is on the Nicoya peninsula. I've not brought fish back from here, but have sampled the river. The convicts (as well as other fish) on the Nicoya Peninsula are pretty different looking from others found in Costa Rica. There is a mountain range separating it from the mainland. All the convicts I've seen on the peninsula have extreme yellow-gold coloration compared to other convicts. They are also much higher bodied as well as larger compared to the other convicts found through the country. I don't think it's a diet thing as the fish have been kept in captivity for some time and they haven't changed color, nor have the f1 fry I have.

I have a confession. I'm a cichlaholic.

Its naturally occuring. Its actually yellow in coloring and is the one profiled as the fish of the month.  Sam B. has the history on it.

Neat little fish.  Seems "front heavy" compared to the typical "convict".  Is the orange completely natural, or was this fish fed a color enhancing diet?
