I agree, my favorite convict.  Just incredible looking with the yellow/gold.

My f1's from a different pair are approachin an inch and are starting to get some nice yellow coloration in the fins. This is my favorite convict so far. I've got another wild pair with fry right now that they've been guarding for close to two months! It's hard to clean that tank because that 7" male get quite a head of steam and can bite pretty hard  :D.

I have a confession. I'm a cichlaholic.

I put my group in with Jim's. On the way back from meeting, I realized I didn't have the tank space and Jim offered to house and feed them for me (thanks Jim!). Hopefully I'll clear some space soon, but we will see. I will be very interested to see how they grow up also, because it looked like there were light colored ones scattered in with the normal convict type coloration.

I spread a few of these out at the last weekend.  If anyone on the forum picked any up (I know the Chef did, as well as Keltonsports), I'm interested as to what you observe as to coloring as they grow out.

I have them in a divided half of a 125G - parrot pair are on the other.  I pulled the first spwan and am growing it out.  The second spawn is still with the parents and being herded all over the divided half - not one of the fry have crossed the divider.  The male hides quite a bit but is obviously extremely showy when he emerges.  I will always have this fish in my tanks. I'll BAP it in June and can bring some more if anyone is interested.

It depends. The only real aggression I've seen is during spawning. So far I've spawned two different pairs and Scott has the pair I gave my dad. The fish were used in a mate selection study and although were able to see fish of the opposite sex, couldn't actually come in contact with them. These fish hadn't bred until I selected pairs, and they are at least 6-7 years old! As you can imagine, they got at it pretty quick and formed great pair bonds.

I spawned my pairs in 20 longs with no aggression issues and these are big 6-7" fish. When I gave a pair to my dad, he kept them with some Tilapia zilli in a 110 gallon 6 foot tank, and they took over about 5.5 feet of the tank, so they can be pretty rough. They beat the crap out of the tilapia, which are pretty aggressive themselves. I'd say the best is to spawn them in a well developed pair or in a large Central American community tank. Remember, they are still convicts, so they will breed like rats and be tough/aggressive.

I have a confession. I'm a cichlaholic.
