A few years ago (maybe more) they used to call it Malawi bloat.
I went through 20 haitiensus before I got the female that made it to an adult.  It was disconcerting, but worth it in the end.

Russ-

It's all species related, you can be Mojo and have the same issue. Don't let it keep you from keeping some of these great fish! I had 12 Isthlanthum, and lost all but 1 to bloat, and he turned out to be a monster, who Motag7, still has today (One of my biggest regrets was giving up that fish)

That bloating issue drives me crazy. I have lost Islantum, bartoni,H. sp. Turquoise,Pantos, blue labs, yellow labs, etc, etc. Its pushed me away from certain species. And I realized I just must not have the talent to keep them.

I agree as long as you still have a pair all should be good. Sometimes you have to have loss to produce life.

KNuthson has the theory I also abide with, and is part  of the cichlid experience. If the remaining male and female are copacetic, it's all worth it.

That sucks. Sorry to hear you lost one of the males. Good luck with the other two.                                                                                                                                                                                                                Aaron

He does look very good - never colored up like that in my tank.  Good luck!

The bloating male bought the farm, but the other 2 are fine, although I divided them again.
The one healthy male has colored up nicely.
