Amphilophus sagittae - "cream-sicle"

8 years 2 months ago #30441 by Fishnut2
Mine came close to spawning yesterday. Circling, flaring the gills, lip-locking, and cleaning the flowerpot. But after an hour or two, the male started beating on her again. Good thing she's tough. I'll try again in a few days.

Scott-

Grow Outs? How are they doing? Any Pairing?

No pairing yet.  Two males are evident. May need to thing the herd sooner that I thought and you and Aaron could get a present next meeting.

I guess if I was pinned up with my mate 24/7 I'd get a little angry too! ;D

Those are some sweet fish.

Oh yes.  This weekend, I'll take some pics of this male growing out.  Most unique variation of Amphilophus I have ever kept.

Is there anything else in the tank?  I wouldn't think they would be that aggressive.

Actually, just the opposite.  If the male has only his mate to take out his aggression on, he will kill her.  Dithers will work depending on the fish.  Convicts are good collateral damage.

Ziggy,

Just a couple of BN plecos...if he hasn't killed them. The pleco's dorsal fins were tore up badly and they were hiding behind a powerhead the last time I looked. Decor is 2 pieces of granite (I get for free) and an 8" flowerpot. The female hides behind the flowerpot, but he'll move it out the corner to get at her.

Thanks,

I should have some bigger tanks coming this weekend. I can cut an eggcrate divider today. Thier aggression caught me off guard. I expected some, but not as intense as this. On the 1st introduction they lip-locked for about 30 seconds...and then he flat out tried to kill her. Even my piranhas aren't that agressive!
