Amphilophus sagittae - "cream-sicle"

7 years 11 months ago #30897 by whetfish
Got nine of the "extras" from Scott last weekend.  Today, it looks like two are pairing up.  I noticed the far side of the 125 has the sand moved out of the corners and two sagittae have noticeable humps.  The, hopefully, pair are keeping the other seven fish on the opposite half of the tank.

Scott - Have you noticed a hump getting more pronounced prior to breeding?

Not checked for facts.

Thanks a bunch Scott! I can send you pics if you'd like. Hopefully, they will look like the other Amphilophus. At least they should.

I have a confession. I'm a cichlaholic.

Sam - Just pulled a sample for you today of these as well.  Along with the barred sample, I'd be interested if you notice anything extraordinary as far as differences.  Not sure how far your analysis goes, but the variability in terms of physical characterstics is a bit more than the barred variety.

Sam, I did think of you but they spawned in a spot I cannot access very well without changing the tank setup.  Soon I will be moving some fish around including this pair where they are more accessible.  I'll get a sample from spawn two for sure.

Wow those are a nice colorful amp. Supposedly they don't get citrinellus size....

Yes, agreed, very nice coloring.  I believe they may top out at 10".

This pair spawned and wrigglers are evident.  ;D  I divided the tank to separate the pair from the rest of the riff raff.  A second pair are bonding - the largest male and this girl below - the most "creamsicle" of the females.

With two breeding pairs, looks like I'll have up to about 8 available soon.

I let Scott know at the last meeting that his suggestion (holes for the female in an eggcrate partition) worked great. Aggression was cut by 95%, and they get along great now. Still no spawn, but plenty of pre-spawn activity. I anticipate a spawn within the next 30 days. I'm guessing it's a conditioning issue at this stage. (M-12" F-8")

Good deal - I bet they spawn soon as well.
