Sam, thanks, and will do on the sample.  That reminds me, you wanted the labiatus as well.  I'm going downstairs and do that right now.

Awesome. That would be quite an accomplishment to get a spawn of lyonsi. Please Scott, I need a sample. This fish is super rare in Costa Rica and I've only seen 1 fish in about 15 hours of time in their distribution.

I have a confession. I'm a cichlaholic.

Been a while since I provided an update of my lyonsi.  I have 5 fish total, 4 of which were of my original group that I've grown out since early 2009.  Those 4 fish ended up all being males.  In fact, two others that I lost, one to a head injury that never healed and became infected, and a second to a heart attack upon being bucketed for transport to nuth88's tanks, were also likely both males.  I had a group of six fish that all likely ended up being males.  A friend that I have found in Portland provided me with a definite female, and a very nice looking one.  So with all 5 fish in a 6 foot tank, all 4 boys have been vying for the female's attention and I had never been able to find the right combination.  Over the last 6 months or so, I've had her with each of the 4 males separately, or in some form of combination.  So today, I had an idea - I previously divided the tank with egg crate so that one/third of the tank housed the female and other two/third's with two of the males - the dominant male and the most submissive of the other males.  I kept that setup for about 10-12 days, with the female just staring at the two males, one chasing the other.  Today, I moved the submissive male into the female's section of the divided tank.  Below is a pic of her tonight - she lit up bright yellow, and the submissive male's tale turned bright red.  They cleared the entire back corner of their area of the tank of gravel and started lip locking.  Fingers crossed !

I just love this species.  These pics are not the best, but you can get a good look at the red and spangling along the tail and dorsal.  Hope I can get them to breed.
