The swaps are a madhouse, we need to change this IMHO

I've always enjoyed myself at the swaps.  Sure it's alittle hectic...but I've not been to many events of that nature that weren't.  As far as rude people go...well, that sort of behavior is definately uncalled for.  But, I don't know that GCCA swap folks can do much about them.  They'll be rude in a room of 5 or 500 attendees.

I'd also hate to see some of the smaller sellers not present.  It's fun to have alot of options and I've gotten some really cool stuff from smaller sellers in the past.

Finally, while it wouldn't kill me to see some of the non-"livestock" stuff go...I always spend money at the book table, and often pick up food or decorations at the swaps....

It's only my opinion, but I really enjoy the swaps as they are.

I have been attending swaps since 1999-2000.  I have always really enjoyed them.  I sold for the first time at the last swap.  To me the problem with raising the price for sellers is that it would make smaller sellers like myself think twice about getting a table.  I am planning on getting another table at the next swap but if it was double the cost I would be less likely to sell as often.  My guess is that some people would sell at 1 or two swaps instead of all 4.  There may be less vendors at the swaps.  I attend and sell at some saltwater swap meets and the ones I have been at have been around $30.

I like the ideas of starting a little later,  having an early entree admission (maybe 30 minutes early), and having the contact information link to the vendor for preorders.

the problem with doubling the room is that we dont know if we will have the available hotel space to double the room. the hotel doesnt give us the room info right before the swaps. if we book too many vendors and cant get the large room we have a problem. we could create a reserve list, but we still may not know what kind of room we get until last miniute.

also it might look kind of bad of we have a large room and only sell half of the tables and the rest are left empty.

I'd be happy to join the swap committee and/or join in the discussion of ideas or costs.  A few brief thoughts on this:

Advance tickets: sell them at the monthly meetings

Room size:  We can get a double size room from the Sheraton.  I also heard that the swap tables have been selling out quickly, so there is an unknown amount of additional exhibitors that would like a table.  How about we try one "double size" swap after the summer break? At that point there hasn't been a show for a while and there should be some pent up demand.

Obviously, as a new member I have no idea if this has been tried before or if double the number of table fees would cover the cost of the extra room.  I would volunteer to come early and help set up for the extra vendors.

Sorry my bad, I was counting the Rare Fish Auction that we had this year. Only two auctions is great as the amt of man power is crazy.

I will be there to help in what ever way I can.

runners are usually available at the auctions. people volunteer to run beacue they can get an upclose look a the fish. there are people i only see at the auctions as volunteers, who i never see at the swaps or rarely at the meetings.

the reason that there are only 2 auctions is because of the need for manpower. it takes 3-4 times as many people to have an auction than it does to run a swap. a swap also last 4-5 hours while the auctions more like 10-12 hours or longer.

Dragonkeeper, we used to run 3 auctions a year, until about 2005. We burnt out so many people it was unreal. That is how I got the job of auction chairman from Chuck who ran them fo 5-7 years. I believe two auctions is the magic number, otherwise I get allot of volunteer for only an half hour (not that I don't appriecate any voluneer time). I'm there for a min of 12 hours with 2-3 others that get there early and stay the entire time. I'm not trying to complain, I volunteered for the job since no one else took or wanted it after Chuck left.
To run one of our auctions, there are 8-10 possitions that need filled the untire time of the auction, plus an additional 4-5 possitions for pre-auction bag check-in (approx 2-hours) then a limitless amount of runners throught the auction. This is why increasing the aoumt of auctions is not recomended.
I'll will have to say since going to two the price per bag has been very high, great for the club and sellers, also going Cichled only or five bag max non-cichlid has helped the ending time to be around 7:00 pm instead of 11:00pm or latter. As someone once said it's a neccessery evil. So with all that said I hope we have alot more volunteers on the 27th

I have been involved in 2 swaps as a vendor and 2 as only a buyer. All 4 times I have seen some crowd problems but for the most part things get worked out amicably.

As far as wanting more swaps. How about we spread them out evenly through out the year? I noticed that on the calendar this year we have the swap in March and then one in April.  I'm sure we will have another swap this year but there isn't on listed on the calendar (no big deal). Is there an option to take the swap in  april and move it to late may. I wouldn't suggest June because of the classic. If we can space out that one to late May then we don't really need one until August. I guess what I am getting at is a somewhat set schedule of swaps and Auctions. We definatly don't need a auction or swap every month. I would say 3 or 4 swaps a year and 3 or 4 major auctions a year (classic is considered major auction).

again just my .02.        ;D
