Bob -

Don't go black with the demasoni. It will cause the fish to darken up to the point that you almost wont see them. The black substrate will cause them to turn almost black. When I had my Demasoni / lab tank I used White and it looked awesome - the colors just popped!

The 3m T grade is great stuff.  I still haven't gone,  but I am going in the next week or so for some more.  Couple bags of white for my Troph tank,  and couple or three black for my 90 that is going to a demasoni / yello lab tank.  That way I got some left over of both.

I love the 3M black sand in my Malawi tank.  I have had brown sand, pool filter sand, and white fine-grain pebble (a little bigger than sand), and I have to say black is my favorite.  I currently have a blue painted background that goes from darker navy blue at the bottom to a medium blue at the top, and I am thinking of scraping it off and painting it black as well.  My rocks are the white holey rocks stacked up, and I have good lighting with a full hood, so the fish and rock are really accentuated and you aren't distracted.  It can be like watching the fish floating in space, people that visit really like it.  I was changing water last night and saw 3 little yellow lab fry in the holes of the rock!

Well for malawi's, any peacocks, haps. i guess for the tags you might want to go beige or white.

How would black sand blasting sand work out? What malawi fish and tang fish would look good with black sand though?

if i were you and had the money for good or high quality black sand, this is what i would do.

SAND!! both tanks.

Pick one for Malawi and the other for Tangs. i would personally do Malawi in the 63 and tangs in the 40 because, generally speaking if im correct, tangs are smaller than malawi fish. then go for some nice rockwork and BAM awesome tanks. just my opinion.

there is no easy answer other than it depends on the fish.

Black sand. was created by spaunen
Ive been debating on whether I should put black sand in my 63 and 40 gallon tanks. It seems like a lot of people here have black sand in their aquariums. I want to put tang. cichlids in the 63 but I'm a lake malawi guy and should I get malawi cichlids to tangs for my 63? I want your opinion. I do have a 120 gallon mbuna tank but in my house I don't have a tank that houses lake tang. fish. How good does the black sand bring out fishes colors? Does it wash away any fishes colors?

Spaunen.
