Well how was the classic

I missed the Classic last year, but I really enjoyed myself this year. I was a proud papa seeing my son Sam Borstein as a speaker. I had a great time, drank some, saw a bunch of friends. I thought the speakers were great.

The Classic was a great time, gave me a chance to reconnect with a lot of people after having been out of the hobby for a couple of years. Picking up prizes in the show was a bonus, since I only entered them to help bolster the numbers. Only talks I caught were Anton's, but those were worth the price of admission for me. I am sorry I wasn't more helpful, since I am a GCCA member now; I'll try to do better next year.

Auction seemed a bit small, but the bigger problem was a lack of buyers more than the lack of items to sell. Despite improvement the economy is still not good, and that is hurting a lot of auctions. I did manage to pick up some nice fish, and as a New World enthusiast I found prices pretty cheap. I noticed some Africans going for far more than I thought they were worth, but then, I don't really think most of them are worth anything! ;)

BTW, Mario, that photo of the Cichla should be Photoshopped onto a black background, he could be next year's Classic mascot!

Mario, really nice peacock bass photo. Ought to be a poster. And thanks for getting those auction checks out so darned fast!

I doubt the story telling had much to do with any fish that might have been in poor shape at the end of the auction. It was completely normal for the Classic auction to go to midnight in the late 90s / early 2000s and this one was over in a few short hours. Not at all like the 97 ACA when we went to 2:00 a.m. in a 100 degree tent with relatively few gaspers. (Ray started that auction off too. This is supposed to be the last of his 19 years of providing $2,000 of donated dry goods to the GCCA, so a little extra slack this time for stories seems acceptable.)

Oh I can believe it, seemed like an interesting guy and a great person to listen to his stories in a different time and place. Just during an auction seemed like the wrong place for all of it. It was a small auction compared to normal but still got drawn out quite a while and a lot of fish towards the end were being sold with dead or close to dying fish gasping for air. Was still fun though and got some good deals on some of the bags I got. Hoping my work schedule changes and I'll be able to make the meeting times and register as a member soon!

Was very light on fish compared to normal but still went long for what was there. Way too many stories and chit chat by the first speaker doing dry goods, First fish probably wasn't put up for auction until an hour and a half after start time and a lot of fish by the end were either already dead or struggling(Some of course due to bad bagging) Once the auctioneers doing the fish came up though it did pick up speed and there were some good deals to be had. Hoping to next year be able to catch the main day of the classic, would have loved to have heard Anton and Laif's panels.

The first auctioneer of dry goods is Ray "Kingfish" Lucas. Believe it if not, people love to sit and listen to his chit chat. He's a big draw, and personally I love the guy. Hopefully next year you can drop into the vendor room and sit down a while and talk with him. The guy is a font of knowledge, and just a really cool guy. He's what the hobby is all about in my opinion. Making friends, and talking fish, and in Rays case?........cars, Elvis, kids, animals, anything. I've spent hours just bs'ing with him.

If ya make it next year, I'll buy ya a beer and we'll sit with Ray and start him on a subject and just let him go :)

It was great,
one of the better ones as far as I can remember. Excellent speakers line up, many cool vendors, awesome fish for silent auction.
I don't remember that we had this many volunteers ever, which made it for easy set up and break down.
Hotel, including staff, was amazing. Great service and plenty of room.
If we had few more people it would be even better, but I don't care because I had a blast.

I would like to take an opportunity to say TANK YOU to all volunteers, speakers and anybody that help in any way those 4 days.
Especial Thanks to ElJefe - our president Shawn and first lady Shelly for their hard work. Keith for organizing show room, Jason for ordering cool fish for silent auction and Ric Perez for picking them up from airport, Elizabeth ( Betsy ), Rob, Erick, Jimmy, Jim, Don, Jim, Mary, Erickson's, Matt, Chris, Todd, Bob, Mary, Mike H. who cut his Hawaiian vacation short to be there with us and everybody else.

Here is the few pictures for those that miss the whole thing:

It all started with breakfast at Danny's:

From there we went to shed to load the truck..

....and then to Hillside Best Western:
