Mike, thanks, just saw this.  Earlier in the day, I posted an ad to sell off some extra males, since it appeared to be as you said - too many cooks in the kitchen.  In the meantime, I am also trying to find some space in other tanks for them.  The dominant male has a pit but is spending most of his time banging other boys....er "fighting" other boys.  Thanks for the info.

Update -just removed 4 other males.  Group of 11 had 6 males and 4 females, one of which died last year, and one dunno fish.  So now the dominant male has the 3 girls, one subdom male, and the dunno.

Mine bred once, a long time ago before I did BAP.

Size is an issue with this fish.  Almost like a frontosa - they need to be mature.  Once the males were > 7", breeding wasnt a problem.

They will breed in a pit or on a flat surface.  Feed them well, and the next time we get a storm, hit them with a large cool water change the day before (or the day of).  Keep an extra male or two, but dispose of the rest.  While the males do like a little competition, too many males will delay spawning.

I think.

I've only got a single male so no experience with breeding them, but here is an article from cichlid-forum.com that had some info.

Hello....?  Where is the Hap people?

One male is big and blue and keeping all 15 other fish in one-fourth of the tank.  How do these guys breed - do I provide a cave?  He's cleared off a good space of gravel exposing the bare tank.

They are beautiful.  I have one male keeping all other fish in one half of a 6 ft tank.  Any ideas what to do to trigger a spawn?
